The Laminitis Prevention Club is here! 🌱🐴

This club has been created through a collaborative partnership between Scott Mitchell Veterinary Care and Horse Weighbridge North East Limited, bringing together veterinary expertise and practical equine weight-management experience with one shared goal: helping horse owners reduce the risk of laminitis through education, monitoring, and proactive management. If you've just joined, welcome and thanks for being a founding member!

When Liz and I set up the original Laminitis Prevention Club back in 2023, our mission was clear:

✨️Spread evidence based information so as many horses as possible can avoid laminitis✨️

Since then, we've amassed a lovely group of conscientious and knowledgeable owners, and our in person meetings have been filled with camaraderie, friendliness (and cake! 🍰😋). You really won't find a more supportive group of horse owners than the ones that come to SMVC at Tyne Green every few months.

The thing which increasingly struck us, however, was the fact that many of our members already had an impressive knowledge of laminitis management. Their horses were healthy weights and ( best of all ) they'd avoided the horrid condition. A brilliant achievement! 🥳

With that, Liz and I felt the mission was somewhat unfinished. The owners attending our meetings were not the owners in the trenches, nor were they those where "Laminitis came from nowhere". It's these owners we needed to reach. 🌱

So we've made the decision to open things up - no longer is the club exclusive to Scott Mitchell Vets now, everybody is welcome! 🙏🤗

We will still run the full membership plan, which includes discounted insulin testing and 3 weighbridge consultations for SMVC members only (email here if you want to join that one) . We will still do some in person meetings, which may also be recorded for our online members.

But our club membership has evolved and will look like this:

Membership is only £20 for the year!

As a member, you have access to exclusive online content designed to support you throughout the year. You will learn a whole host of things, including:

• recognising early risk factors for laminitis

• effective weight monitoring

• body condition scoring

• nutrition and grazing management

• seasonal risk awareness

• practical strategies for maintaining a healthy horse or pony

One of the most important things we want members to take away from this club is that laminitis prevention is rarely about a single action. It is about combining good information, regular monitoring, and consistent management decisions over time. Small changes made early can often make a significant difference.

We are excited to build this community with you and encourage you to make the most of the resources available.
